500,000 children die every year from diarrhoea caused by unsafe water and poor sanitation. That's over 1,400 children a day.
Without safe water or sanitation, people are trapped in a cycle of poverty and disease. Across the developing world, millions of women are wasting precious time collecting dirty water, children are dying from preventable diarrhoeal diseases, and communities have open sewers running through them.
To transform lives, WaterAid delivers taps and toilets, campaigns for change and builds the skills of local people. We work with local partners to help the world’s poorest people to gain access to safe water and sanitation. Together with improved hygiene, these basic human rights underpin health, education and livelihoods, forming the first essential steps out of poverty. We want everyone, everywhere to have access to safe water and sanitation by 2030.
WaterAid and our partners use practical, sustainable solutions to provide safe water, effective sanitation and hygiene education to the poorest and most marginalised people, and make sure communities have the right skills to keep technologies working. We also seek to influence policy at national and international levels.
