Freedom From Torture

Freedom from Torture exists to offer a welcome environment and hope for a better future, to people who have experienced the worst of humanity.

We provide therapies to improve physical and mental health, we medically document torture, and we provide legal and welfare help.

We expose torture globally, we fight to hold torturing states to account and we campaign for fairer treatment of torture survivors in the UK.

Annabelle is a torture survivor from Uganda who was detained and tortured for 10 years for liking a woman. Annabelle is making great progress in therapy but she knows she will need therapy for a long time. “When I have my sessions at Freedom from Torture, I feel energised, but when I get home, it becomes difficult again.”

Your donations will help pay for therapy sessions for Annabelle to continue to receive the support she needs after her traumatic experiences.

Romesh is a survivor from Sri Lanka who was detained and tortured after protesting injustices in his country. When he fled to the UK, he finally felt safe, but he was struggling with the aftermath of his torture, often thinking about ending his life. Specialised therapy helped him remember happy memories from before his torture, and find hope again that there is more to life than the sadness he felt. Thanks to therapy, Romesh wants to live.

Your donations will help provide life-saving support for survivors like Romesh.
